1,2,3 Mott Hall II 4,5,6 Warriors! The 2015-16 season started out tough after the team lost all of last year’s 8th graders. Eventually, the team started to work together to win games. At the end of the NYC middle school regular season the Warriors’ record was 4-6. Our three leading scorers were Jordan Williams, Enzo Caceres and Dallis Dillard. Our top rebounder was Jayden Gerena, who basically got every rebound that was thrown at him. Although we had some very hard losses, we overcame and finished strong with a three-game winning streak.

On March 9, we had a playoff game where we clinched the final seed and faced a very tough opponent, New Design Middle School (MS 410). We were down until halftime, where we tied it up. Then in the 4th quarter we were up by five. Jordan Williams scored 11 of the 15 points in the 4th quarter. The last quarter of the game was our best of the season because we were playing hard and working together. Even though we lost the game, we showed pride and determination in our team.

For the second consecutive year the team played in the Asphalt Green league. There we have a smaller team, but have been playing well. We ended the regular season in that league with a 3-2 record, which placed us in the second seed. We qualified for the playoffs, but lost in the first round. Notables from this league are Jordan Williams, Enzo Caseres, Max Cohen and Jayden Gerena, who have played well all season.

The good thing is most of the team are 6th and 7th graders. The team is sorry to say goodbye to graduating 8th graders, Fetah and Justin, who were a big part of this year’s team. Justin has been on the team since he was in 6th grade; this was Fetah’s first time ever playing basketball. Another notable first-year player was Jayden Gerena, the team’s center, who helped the team by getting a lot of rebounds.

When asked about this season, Coach Small said, “We started out not playing how we should, but eventually playing as a team.”

Basketball legend Michael Jordan once said, “If you run into a wall don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it . Go through it, or work around it.” That is what next season will be like. We will climb over the wall as we prepare for next season.
